For his work of art, Erik Weeda researched the concept of ‘snoezelen’, a sensory therapy used in the medical treatment of demented patients. ‘Snoezelen’ is a method used for making contact with psychogeriatric patients. His Sensory Cafeteria offers sensory experiences in a space that is separated from the hallway by a wall of glass, mirrors and wood. A calm ambiance is created by means of an audio and light installation and various detached curtains enable the user to create his or her own domain within the room. In addition to this, the space contains a number of objects that relate to the experience of the De Voord’s residents such as a phonograph that plays music from the Veluwe region. The room is used by the De Voord’s residents and visitors as a meeting place and as a place in which to relax.
