Ralph Kämena (born in 1968) made a panoramic video in the North Brabant region of Peel for the 2003 ‘Year of the Farm’. Large-scale pig farming has been the main activity in the Peel region for several decades. Environmental considerations and political decisions, however, have determined that this form of husbandry has to disappear. The areas where pigs are kept have to be reconstructed in a retrospective style into historicising landscapes. Kämena’s video installation combines panoramic images of the present landscape with historical images illustrating the cliché’d nostalgia of the old Peel landscape. In this situation, these historical images both look back at the past and anticipate the future.
