Beyond- Leidsche Rijn: Pursuit of Hapiness
03.09.2005 - 30.10.2005
Leidsche Rijn
Manifestation in Leidsche Rijn
4 September – 30 October 2005
The manifestation 'Pursuit of happiness' is a thematic continuation of the first Beyond-manifestation that was held in 2003. Whereas Parasite Paradisefocused on architecture, i.e. the ‘hardware’ of Leidsche Rijn, the 2005 manifestation will focus on the ‘software’, i.e. the people, their ideals, their dreams and their desires. What is happiness in a new Dutch housing estate at the start of the 21st Century? Thirty visual artists from different countries will, through their films, videos, installations and art objects, present their impressions of the perfect or imperfect life, love and hate, joy and sorrow.
The manifestation is made up of various parts including new works by, among others, Erik van Lieshout, Tomas Saraceno, Monica Bonvicini and Barbara Visser. There will also be screenings of films and videos by, among others, Aernout Mik, Marijke van Warmerdam and Anri Sala. Additionally there will be an evening programme, a hiking and cycling route, a guided tour and an ‘exhibition café’ designed by culinary design studio, Proef. Proef also specifically developed the menu for the exhibition.
The central focus of the manifestation will be the new exhibition space, which was designed by Dutch conceptual artist, Stanley Brouwn. The new pavilion is located near to Shigeru Ban’s Paper Dome, which was placed by Beyond in 2004. Both structures are situated near a farming complex on the Hogeweide in Leidsche Rijn.
