The Prof. Dr. van der Leeuw Foundation, a meeting centre for church and art, devised the Abri project in collaboration with SKOR with the aim of giving a new interpretation to the additional functions that churches formerly had, such as providing a safe refuge and a recognition point in the landscape. In 1992 seven artists were asked to submit proposals for a work of art with the character of a refuge, to be sited at seven prominent locations in the Netherlands. Over the years a number of the proposed projects have been carried out.
Proposals were submitted by Madelon Hooykaas & Elsa Stansfield, Marinus Boezem, Thom Puckey, Paul Perry, Pjotr Müller, Moniek Toebosch and Jan van den Dobbelsteen. The designs by Pjotr Müller and Paul Perry have not been carried out and the project by Thom Puckey will be realised in a different context.
