On April 26, May 24 and June 28, 2008, Enschede hosts the Culture Mile, which involves a range of performances. The Culture Mile is a physical route which is part of the urban structure of Enschede. This route connects the inner city with the district Roombeek and passes the most important cultural institutions of the city.

In 2008 many new cultural institutions located along the Culture Mile - beginning with the Rozendaal complex (April 22) - open their doors to the general public. The route will also gain a completely new ‘street profile’, although its actual itinerary and identity will only be inscribed into the collective memory of Enschede’s residents and visitors once it’s been used frequently enough. A number of performances, which will serve as the project’s starting signal, will take place on April 26, with follow-ups on May 24, June 7 and 28. The program was compiled by Performance Lab, a foundation managed by Amsterdam-based artist, Mariëlle Videler. Videler likens the Cultuurmijl to a spinal cord - strong and flexible - and commissioned eleven artists to interpret it as such. Performances by the following artists will take place: Nina Boas & Marieke Coppens, Anno Dijkstra, Peter Fengler, Francesca Grilli, Pauline de Groot, Toine Horvers, Zhana Ivanona, Maurice Bogaert & Mathijs Lieshout, Monali Meher and Mariëlle Videler.
In the same way that energy travels through the spinal cord, this route, with its series of performances, will continue to unfold and develop. As for the audience: they will witness and often actually participate in the performances that plan on using the human body as a means of creating images in the form of new rituals or significant and intimate events. Lastly, in line with the current status of the ‘mile’, there is plenty of space for improvisation and (one on one) interaction with audience members.
