The motif of the tile paintings that Ben Oostrum made for the psychiatric clinic, Siependaal, is made up of three fused spheres. Many patterns can be made with this simple shape such as regular structures and more complex interweavings but also random patterns. Oostrum first made a large field of randomly placed spheres and then distilled from these the motifs for the tableaus that would be place in various spaces. He chose different color scheme for each floor: green/blue/pink for the garden, pink/purple/blue for the ground floor and blue/red/yellow for the top floor. With this design, Ben Oostrum continues to build on the tradition of pattern design while, simultaneously, adding in a contemporary visual language.
