In 2002 Ram Katzir made the interactive installation ‘Bubble’ for the entrance foyer of the Juliana Children’s Hospital in The Hague. The work consists of three large built-in aquaria with tropical fish and a virtual aquarium. The real aquaria function as a transparent wall, screening off the rearmost part of the foyer. Behind the aquaria there is a blue wall with touch screen monitors displaying computer animations of an artificial aquarium. The water on the monitors undulates and ripples. When you touch the screen bubbles appear and float slowly upwards making a gurgling sound. Now and then a fish appears which reacts to the movement of your fingers. The fish allow themselves to be stroked and tickled before continuing on their way and turning up again on the next monitor.
