The Netherlands scream for culture!
First there was the fine-toothed comb. Then came the efficiency cuts. Later these were followed by the across-the-board cuts. And now it is the turn of the blunt instrument. The Cabinet has launched a frontal attack on the arts and culture. Cuts of more than 20% have been announced. And to top it all, VAT on tickets for the expressive arts, concerts and performances is to be raised from 6% to 19%. All of this is taking place against a background in which the entire central government arts budget costs no more than the construction of just a few kilometres of motorway. These are not cutbacks; this is the deliberate demolition of something the majority of the Dutch people enjoy, and from which every Dutch man, woman and child profits.
On Saturday November 20, 2010 the audience is screaming for culture, from Maastricht to Groningen, from Rotterdam to Arnhem.
