Eight well-known artists & designers design their personal ideal house

Beyond asked eight well-known artists (including Droog Design, Joep van Lieshout and Hans Aarsman & Erik Kessels) to design their ultimate VIP residence on a free plot of land in ’t Zand. In addition to its spectacular architecture, a VIP villa is primarily a house with a distinctive meaning; a house that influences the collective atmosphere of the neighborhood and that makes a powerful statement about living and living together. In other words, a contemporary Rietveld-Schröder house.

In the southeastern corner of the as yet to be developed Leidsche Rijn Park lies the Hoge Woerd, an old orchard that contains the remnants of a Roman fort. Leidsche Rijn’s rich archaeological history all but literally comes to the surface on this particular spot. This is where Beyond placed two parasites (lightweight architectural works). One will be used as a presentation space for the ‘nature and environment communication center’ and the other for presentations on archaeology.

Koehoornplein, a temporary traffic circle on the outskirts of Utrecht, serves to direct traffic into Leidsche Rijn. Located on the border of the old and the new Utrecht, this traffic circle is being used in the sculpture project, Roulette. Roulette is an alternating display of sculptures on a temporary traffic circle.

A number of artists are being invited to react to the urbanisation in Leidsche Rijn, either by building a house or by organising an action within the artists’ houses programme.

Beyond-Leidsche Rijn: Action Research

Action Research is a programme made up of temporary projects and quickly-made art works created by artists for the already inhabited sites. The works focus on contemporary Leidsche Rijn as a community under construction.
A variety of artists, domestic as well as international, were invited to participate in Action Research. On the initiative of SKOR, Dennis Adams (US) and the Danish artists collective, N55, created works. Since 2004 a variety of artists have taken up residence in Leidsche Rijn to develop projects. Beyond-Leidsche Rijn: Parasite Spots

In 2003 the manifestation, Parasite Paradise, was organized as a prelude to the programme, Parasite Spots. During the following years a variety of artists, designers and architects were approached to design a mobile living and working space and/or functional facilities that would be placed all over Leidsche Rijn. The project investigated how, outside of its regular plan, one could respond to changing needs in a flexible manner.

From 1 August until late September 2003 Leidsche Rijn held the exhibition, Parasite Paradise. Near to the Leidsche Rijn’s Information Center, which is located on the Verlengde Vleutenseweg, one could visit a settlement made up of around twenty mobile units. These units were created by domestic and international artists and represent small-scale, artistic, architectural and urban developmental works that make a playful yet serious comment on systematic urbanization.

Nine designers and artists were approached to create a design plan for a 'Wapla', a car wash that would be placed in Leidsche Rijn. Each made proposals.

BEYOND sluit af met opening van permanent beeldenpark, presentatie eindpublicatie en overzichtstentoonstelling

Een uitslaande brand maakte op vrijdag 11 september 2009 een einde aan Beyond. Beyond startte begin deze eeuw als meerjarig kunstprogramma in Nederlands grootste vinexwijk in aanbouw: Leidsche Rijn. De naam Beyond is ontleend aan een quote van Rem Koolhaas ‘For each project there is a Beyond’. Tien succesvolle jaren worden op elf september 2009 groots afgesloten met de opening van een permanent beeldenpark, waarbij het nieuwe kunstwerk Barricade van de Spaanse kunstenaar Fernando Sánchez Castillo in brand zal worden gestoken.
